Bryant has always had a wide repertoire but he sounds most at home when playing the blues. This trio date with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Grady Tate allows him to do just that with "Please Send Me Someone to Love" being the only nonblues on the program. But Bryant's cult status, not only among jazz listeners but with classical and rock musicians and fans around the world, has been achieved through his solo piano recordings. This album of performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival is one of his best, incorporating all of the elements that make Bryant's work so endearing--bebop, blues 5/5(4).

Bryant (solo piano) 12/19/ Five of the 7 tunes are blues, Bryant's forte (the 2 least successful tracks are the non-blues). ME AND THE BLUES to me is the best: taken slow, it's a great tune and Bryant does marvels with it. Sometimes solo piano albums find the player getting too introsective or showy, but that's never the case here.5/5(10).
